Why Jesus Today?
In 1992 the rock band Bon Jovi released a song called "Keep The Faith." In it, lead singer Jon Bon Jovi
sings these words: "Walking in the footsteps of society's lies / I don't like what I see no more /
Sometimes I wish I was blind / Sometimes I wait forever / To stand out in the rain / So no one sees me
cryin' / Trying to wash away the pain / Mother father / There's things I've done I can't erase / Every night we
fall from grace / It's hard with the world in your face / Trying to hold on, trying to hold on / Faith: you know
you're gonna live thru the rain / Lord you got to keep the faith / Faith: don't let your love turn to hate / Right

Bon Jovi expresses in this song the pain that many people experience in
everyday life in this new millennium. As year 2000 dawned, many people, thought
that the world would be reborn in the new millennium...that there wouldn't be any
need for God or Jesus, that there would dawn an age of love and peace. Yet, life
today proves that Bon Jovi's song "Keep The Faith" is as relevant today as it was
in the 1990's. "Its hard to hold on when there's nothing to lean on." We cause
pain, in our lives, and in others. We make mistakes. We sin. We all do. For
many the heartache is too much too bear. We yearn for a strength greater than
our own. We yearn a Savior. For a living faith in the real world.

In 1990, while still a student at Heidelberg College, Rev. Ron Shifley wrote a poem called "The Christ
of Today." It states,
"A rock-and-roll singer is like the Christ of today
He sings his gospel to a world gone astray
Like the man of Nazareth, his words go unheard
Most people won't listen because they think he's absurd
Although they crucify his music and call it deceit
His song still lives on in the followers of the beat
Through them that were willing enough to hear
His song is still sung both loud and clear
It will last forever clear to the end
Then the angels will join him in singing Amen."

This poem, reflects on how many people think of Jesus today. He is said to be outdated. He's scoffed
at. His words are forgotten. His living presence is ignored. Many people think that God, Jesus, and
Christianity are irrelevant. And yet, in a world filled with war, terrorist attacks, bloodshed, fear, hatred, and
broken lives, more and more people are finding the need for the living presence of Jesus in their lives.
After the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, the world saw what evil could
do. Evil is alive and well. It seeks to destroy people's lives...to destroy faith...to destroy freedom. It
touched my life and yours.
at. His words are forgotten. His living presence is ignored. Many people think that God, Jesus, and
Christianity are irrelevant. And yet, in a world filled with war, terrorist attacks, bloodshed, fear, hatred, and
broken lives, more and more people are finding the need for the living presence of Jesus in their lives.

Amid all of the pain and chaos in the world today we still hear the echoes of Jesus' words recorded in
John 14:1-20 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me... I am the way, the
truth and the life... I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you...because I live you also will live."
Jesus' words still shine in the darkness to provide hope for us today. Because he has been raised from
death to life, because he has conquered, we too can experience new life, real life, resurrection life today.
We need a real Savior as much today as the world did 2,000 years ago. I know I do. What about you?
