"Touching the Impossible"
"Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples
when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have
seen the Lord!."
But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands
and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into
his side, I will not believe it."
A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas
was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came
and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" Then he
said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach
out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and
believe."
Thomas said unto him, "My Lord and my God!"
John 20:24-28
Have you ever heard news that was impossible to believe and said, "I want
to see that for myself." If you have, then you know what Thomas felt like
when he heard from his friends that Jesus had risen from the grave on
Easter morning. It was the impossible. He couldn't believe it. In fact he said
that unless he touched the impossible, unless he touched the living Christ,
that he could not believe.
A week later, Thomas got his wish. Jesus appeared to him and invited him
to not only see the impossible but to touch the impossible. What an
incredible privilege that must have been to reach out and touch the wounds
of the risen Christ. Thomas touched the impossible and his life was
changed forever.
The same thing is true as we work towards launching Living Faith Christian
Community in the next few days. The founding of this new church is an
impossible task. We have almost no money. We have so few involved on
the Launch Team. Yet, Christ has spoken to us all to take a step of Living
Faith and to start a new type of church that is intended to shake up the
neighborhoods around us for His glory. Most of us have doubts that it will
happen on time. Some family and friends haven't bought into the idea at all.
It's like touching the impossible. "I'll need to see it to believe it."
Well, guess what. Every time I touch the pews in our future Worship Center,
every time I see the church's name in print in EA publications, every time
I've heard from someone in the community that this new church is important
and needed, I touch the impossible and find Jesus there. You will too.
The risen Christ is here in our midst. He is the one planting this church. He
is the one directing things. He is the one who is indeed making things
happen. We can't that's for sure! But Jesus does! Savor his presence.
Touch his life. Learn to believe. Living Faith Christian Community should
be an impossibility. Yet, we can touch it. In days our friends and neighbors
will touch it too. And i pray that they will discover Jesus here, that their lives
will be transformed and that they find a Living Faith. Amen.
