The Apostles Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven
and earth:
And in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord; Who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and
buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again
from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated on
the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He
shall come to judge the living and the dead.
Apostles Creed Facts
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the
resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Apostles Creed was written
about A.D. 150 by the Early Church
in Rome.
It was written in Greek.
Before the Apostles Creed was
written, the only statement of faith
used by the Early Church was
"Jesus Christ is Lord."
(Acts 16:31; Philippians 2:11)
The Apostles Creed was confessed
by new Christians when they were
baptized and joined the Church.
The phrase "holy Christian Church" or
"holy catholic church" does not mean
"Roman Catholic", but "universal" or
"worldwide."
The Heidelberg Catechism features a
line by line summary explanation of
the Apostles Creed.
One of the earliest symbols of Christianity came from Christians living in Rome who etched the symbol of the fish on the walls of the Catacombs to signify where they were secretly meeting for worship.
The Greek word for fish, "icthus" was used by the Early Church as an acronym meaning "Jesus Christ God's Son Savior."
