The Apostles Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven
and earth:
And in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord; Who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and
buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again
from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the
right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall
come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the
resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Apostles Creed was written about A.D. 150 by the Early Church in Rome.
|
It was was written in Greek.
|
Before the Apostles Creed was written, the only statement of faith used by the Early Church was "Jesus Christ is Lord." (Acts 16:31; Philippians 2:11)
|
The Apostles Creed was confessed by new Christians when they were baptized and joined the Church.
|
The phrase "holy catholic church" does not mean "Roman Catholic", but "universal" or "worldwide."
